World Air League Foundation

AVIATION - Back to the Future!

Our Mission

The World Air League Foundation is dedicated to advancing global engagement, scientific exploration, and sustainable innovation through the majestic return of airships to the skies. By organizing the World Sky Games—the historic first competition of lighter-than-air craft to circumnavigate Planet Earth—we aim to inspire a new era of aeronautical achievement and environmental awareness. Our objective is to unite cultures, ignite the imaginations of future generations, and champion airships as a symbol of green aviation and international cooperation. Through the spectacle of the skies, the World Air League Foundation seeks to elevate humanity’s shared vision for a more connected, curious, and conscious world.

Our Environmental Policy

Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals, the World Air League Foundation promotes clean aviation, sustainable innovation, and national pride, celebrating each host’s environmental vision and culture.

Purpose
World Air League Foundation (WAL) advances a cleaner aviation future by showcasing modern lighter-than-air (LTA) technology through the World Sky Race. This policy guides how we plan, deliver, and improve our events and operations to reduce environmental impact and inspire public action.

Scope
Applies to all WAL activities: organizational operations, race planning and logistics, partner and supplier work tied to WAL, marketing/media, and community engagement.

Principles, Commitments & Objectives

  1. Climate & Energy
    • Prioritize LTA platforms and other lower-emission solutions for flight and logistics.
    • Minimize on-site energy use; prefer grid power over generators; improve efficiency each season.
    • Track and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across mobility, energy, and waste.

  2. Sustainable Events
    • Enable low-carbon travel for teams and spectators (public transit, shuttles, active travel).
    • Reduce materials at the source; expand reuse and recycling; cut single-use plastics.
    • Favor local, seasonal, responsibly sourced food and durable merchandise.
    • Design venues and communications to be inclusive and accessible.

  3. Responsible Purchasing
    • Embed sustainability criteria in procurement (carbon, circularity, local sourcing, ethics).
    • Require key vendors to meet WAL environmental and data-sharing expectations.

  4. Nature, Culture & Heritage
    • Plan routes and activities to respect protected areas and sensitive habitats.
    • Collaborate with local authorities and site managers; align with heritage protection rules.
    • Use the Race to educate about conservation and celebrate cultural connections.

  5. Education & Engagement
    • Inspire “look up” moments that connect the public to practical climate solutions.
    • Create STEM and climate learning opportunities for students and communities.
